Dark Secrets

Chapter 2 – P6

Ebenn was enjoying his tea in his office, while scanning some papers, when his son, Maeglor, burst through the double door.

“Father, have you lost your mind? What was that shit at the market? I thought we agreed to keep the weapons a secret for now.”

Ebenn merely lifted his gaze and took another sip of his tea, not in a hurry to answer. “I’m following my plans,” he said simply.

“Following orders, you mean.”

Maeglor finally caught his father’s attention, who set the papers aside and looked at his son, frowning. “What are you talking about?”

“Don’t play dumb with me!” Maeglor snapped and continued in a hushed voice, as if he was sharing a secret. “I saw you talking to that hooded stranger. Who is he? Who does he serve?”

Ebenn rose from his chair, placed his hands flat on the table, and looked sternly at his son. “For your own good, stay out of my affairs!”

“Too late. I got involved in this mess from the moment you asked me to look for Obsidian’s weapons in Nargathar. But I thought you had a plan. I despise these winged bastards, but acting like this, you’ll end up getting us arrested.”

Ebenn slammed his fist on the table. “It’s not about hating the fairies, it’s about power! I’m doing this for us!”

“How so?” Maeglor frowned, confused.

Ebenn sat back down, but kept staring at his son. “For now, the less you know, the better. When the time comes, I will tell you everything.”

Maeglor took a deep breath. “I hope you know what you’re doing, or we will lose our heads. Literally.”

Ebenn paid no attention to his son’s words and returned to his notes and scrutiny of old parchments. “Go see your girlfriend.” He said with a hand gesture, dismissing him. “A good fuck is a great way to get rid of a bad mood.”

Maeglor took a deep breath and tried to rein in his anger. He didn’t like the way his father spoke. “I convinced her to come with me to our estate in Camua. A few days away from the city will do us good.”

Without waiting for Ebenn’s remarks, the furious elf turned to leave. Just as his hand grazed the cool surface of the doorknob, his father’s voice pierced the air.  “I know what you’re doing, Maeglor.” Ebenn declared, taking a leisurely sip of his tea. “It won’t work. Don’t be fooled by a pretty face, son. Aerin doesn’t love you.”

Maeglor’s hand clenched around the doorknob until his knuckles turned white, “I know.” He uttered, his voice dripping with a sinister undertone.”Yet, I shall make her love me. Aerin shall be mine, willingly or not.” With these words hanging ominously in the air, he slammed the door shut behind him.
